


What newness emerges in the ways we perform identities as learners, teachers, teacher educators, and researchers?.What spaces of possibility were created when learning and socialization were physically constricted and digitally mediated, and how can these help researchers and educators reimagine L1 education in and beyond schooling?.How might such reinforcement and transformation be linked to sustainability, diversity, and equity as recurring and emerging themes in L1 research and education?.How have shifts in social interaction and communication reinforced and or transformed established notions of languages, literatures, and literacies?.With an eye on the past and on the presence of the global pandemic, we invite conference participants to (re)imagine possible future transformations of L1 research and education, by attending to questions like: In this sense, the pandemic crisis can be understood as compounded with long-lasting challenges including year-long economic crises and climate change, displacement and relocation, the surge of violence and polarization. In the transition to a post-COVID-19 era, the pandemic crisis serves as a liminal space: an in-between territory that allows the acknowledgement of challenges that pre-existed the pandemic and a place to explore alternative ways of moving forward. The conference theme invites participants to consider how, at the current moment, research helps see challenges as opportunities for rethinking L1 education.
